Solus Launches New Outdoor Gas Firepit Design at HDExpo 2018.

Solus Decor Launches New Gas Outdoor Firepit at HDExpo 2018

Solus are looking forward to once again showcasing our modern backyard fire pits at this year’s Hospitality Design Expo, held at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.

This year we are excited to launch a new Linear fire pit. This new Solus gas firepit is 6ft in length and can be used as single height or stacked for double height. Either composition will have an impact in your outdoor space.

Solus Décor Linear Gas Firepit. Suitable for backyards or commercial spaces. Showcasing at HDExpo 2018. The new design is the result of the talented Solus team’s dedication, vision and many man hours put in to produce an innovative and contemporary design. It is unmistakably Solus.

Are you are looking to make an impact with your entrance? Or a design statement with a modern fire pit for a restaurant or hotel terrace. The Linear can provide semi-private areas when double height, or a divide areas for dining and drinks. It will also provide warmth and atmosphere but not take up valuable seating space. Made in Vancouver, Canada and shipped all over the world. Hence the Solus Linear firepit could be ideal for your restaurant, hotel or other commercial needs.

Along with the new fire pit is the metal table top.  This can convert into a drinks ring for the 36 and 48 Hemi fire pit. Solus started selling this earlier in the year and it has proved very popular for both commercial and domestic requirements. A simple disk table top is also available for the smaller 26 Hemi.

Solus Décor Hemi Gas Firebowl Firepit. With metal drinks ring. Also available as a metal table top. Shown on the terrace at Predator Ridge Resort Canada. Ideal when not used as a fire pit.

Made out of noncorrosive aluminum and stainless steel which compliments the concrete material of the fire pit. The Hemi with drinks ring provides a sculptural fire bowl design, along with somewhere for guests to put drinks. The table top turns a fire pit into a multi-use product. A modern, unusual table that also protects the gas burners when not in use.

HD Expo is the premier trade show and conference for the hospitality industry. The show has been running since 1992 and is presented by Hospitality Design magazine and today it remains at the forefront of the hospitality industry offering the newest and most innovative products.  The conference is an opportunity for those in the industry to share ideas and provide inspiration by connecting with other hospitality professionals.

On our booth, we will of course be displaying and demonstrating a selection of our best-selling fire pits and water features alongside the new additions to our collection. If you are visiting this year, please come and see us and our products on booth 1874. We look forward to meeting you.

Trinity Western University Memorial Garden: Feature Project

Solus Hemi firepit lit at memorial garden university of trinity western langley BC

A scholarship and courtyard renovation honor the life of Jordan Thiessen.

A very special fire pit was installed at the Trinity Western University in British Columbia. It is in memory of the life of Jordan Thiessen who was a student at the university. During his time at the university Jordan felt that the unloved and uncared for Douglas Courtyard could be a beautiful space. With some planting and a fire pit it would offer a place for students to relax and enjoy on campus.  Something he shared with his parents during a campus visit.

When Jordan sadly lost his life on October 18 2012, just 12 days after he married his university sweetheart, the family wanted to do something in his memory. His parents, Shirley and Carey set up the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship endowment but they wanted to do more. They recognized the deep impact that the University had on Jordan’s short life. They felt that making over the Douglas courtyard would not only honor Jordan, but it would also benefit all future students. Shirley threw herself into raising funds for both the scholarship and the courtyard project. The Jordan Thiessen Memorial Courtyard was dedicated September 14, 2013. On what would have been Jordan’s 24th birthday.

The memorial garden is now a wonderful place for students to enjoy, which gives great pleasure to Jordan’s parents.  If you would like to give to the courtyard project, or to the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship, please email Shirley Thiessen at shirley.thiessen@twu.ca.

Making the most of a roof terrace

If you have a roof terrace or balcony, how can you make the most of it? There are some inspirational ideas out there to add value to your outside space:

Create warmth and use your outside space all year with a fire pit. In a small space, it is still possible to add a functional but stylish fire pit that is safe to use. The Firecube is ideal and with different fuel options, it can conform to safety requirements. An optional table top also means it is multi-use.

Solus Firecube

For larger terraces or balconies, fire pits and tables will create a social area with seating positioned around. The Elevated Halo is a great example and used in residential and commercial spaces.

The Gwen Hotel, Chicago featuring a Solus Decor Elevated Halo fire table

Solus Dome water feature

Water features are also an option on a terrace and can create a calm and tranquil environment. They can be an oasis in the city and integral as part of the mindful living trend for 2018*. Look out for self-circulating and “plug and play” products. This means there is no plumbing and water is not being wasted. The Dome is a great example.

There are many designers who are experienced in designing roof top and terrace gardens which do tend to be in cities where outside space is at a premium.

Amber Freda Landscape Design have created some amazing spaces in NYC and their website has a portfolio of these as well as offering informative blogs such as flowers for a city roof top garden.

The Garden Builders in the UK have also worked on transforming roof spaces in London and their blog 7 roof terrace ideas showcases some of them and offers expert advice.

Top things to consider when designing for a firepit

There are many things to consider when designing the space and making a firepit a main feature.

Hemi Firebowl with Ring

DESIGN

This may seem obvious, but you really don’t want to be moving the firepit around the area – it is much easier to move the furniture than the firepit.

FUEL SOURCE

One consideration is the fuel source that will be used. Will it be natural gas, liquid propane, bio-fuel, wood burning? There are pros and cons to all of them. Operating costs, fuel refilling, clean up (or none) and maintenance are all things to think about.

If you are designing the space from scratch and have the ability to run a gas pipe, do so even if you haven’t selected the fire pit yet. Even if you opt for a bio fuel or wood burner, it will allow for future placement of a gas unit before you place your pavers, decking or tile.

SAFETY

Consider children.  How does the firepit operate?  What safety concerns are there?  How is it kept unlit when adults are not about?

MULT-FUNCTIONALITY

A good thing to consider is multi-functionality. Could the firepit be used as a table when not in use as a fire pit? This could possibly replace the need for a coffee table in your design.

LOCAL FIRE CODE

Consider the local fire code. Not all fire pits are created equally. Many states, provinces and counties require the entire fire pit to be certified as an appliance, not just having a certified burner. Most burners these days are certified, but once installed into a custom built brick pit they become uncertified.  If longevity is important – consider the warranty.

IGNITION SYSTEMS

There are a number of ignition systems to consider which include:  Manual lit ignition, Manual lit with flame supervision, Electronic ignition and electronic ignition with adjustable flame. There is also the high-tech option of the smart home kit. Our sales team would be happy to explain these different options in further detail along with how they can best suit your design.

RESALE VALUE

Consider the resale value – even if you are not planning to move or sell, fire pits have been (and continue to remain) one of the top three desired features of all outdoor landscape projects alongside lighting and dining.

Feature Project: The River, the ultimate in Calgary luxury living

Our feature project is a new development in Calgary. The River is the ultimate in luxury living.

The new River development can be found in the Mission area of Calgary. This area blends old and new architecture. 4th Street is located here and is very popular, with it’s fashionable shops and restaurants. This sought after area, riverside location and great design has seen The River become a popular piece of Calgary real estate.

The River development Calgary
The River, Calgary

The talented team that created The River included Ledcor properties. Ledcor acted as both the developer and construction team on the project. They have been responsible for landmark buildings such as the Shaw Tower and the Shangri -La Hotel in Vancouver.  The architects firm Dialog led the design team, with luxury interiors by McIntyre Bills.  Dialog have also been behind some of Canada’s most famed buildings. Through the use of stone, glass, concrete and steel, they create buildings that relate to their environments.  McIntrye Bills are a interior design firm with over 20 years experience.  They are well known for their creative mix of elegance, comfort and functionality.  The strengths of this team are clear to see in the River development.

Like many developers and designers, they understand the value of outdoor space in these buildings. They have maximized this potential by installing Solus fire pits into the balconies and terraces within the overall scheme.  The Solus concrete designs do compliment the overall exterior design of the building. The high grade materials we use to create our fire pits sit well with the luxury feel of this development.

The fire bowl has added a touch of luxury and warmth to the balcony of a master bedroom suite.  The Hemi is available in 3 different sizes and 3 different fuel options. They are hugely adaptable to any outdoor space and location. The design of the Hemi works very well in this setting but there are other Solus designs available.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to find out more about the Hemi or similar products.

Having worked with a number of hotels in various locations we are also keen to be involved with these projects, particularly as we recognize the benefits of adding a fire pit to any commercial venue.  It is always a pleasure to be involved in any hotel project but given the design led nature of the Hotel Eastlund it makes it even more special.  Hotel Eastlund is the newest and finest luxury hotel in Portland combining classic, clean style with modern sophistication in downtown’s thriving Eastside.  In recent years Portland has become well known for the arts, culture and top class restaurants. The hotel brings together sleek design with top quality food and drink with both a cafe and roof top restaurant.

FAQs when specifying a fire pit

FAQ when specifying a fire pit

Why is your product expensive relative to others.

Expensive is a relative term but as they say “you get what you pay for”.  What do we do and is it any different than anyone else?  You be the judge. Here is what happens behind the scenes.

  1. Certification is painful, expensive, time consuming, laborious and requires deep technical expertise.  The Solus plant undergoes regular unannounced audits by the certification lab to verify what we are doing and our testing procedures and paper trails are in order.  Each and every fire pit we make must be burn tested and checked for ignition, leaks and performance.
  2. We use brass burners – not anodized  pan metal burners so we can give you a 25 year warranty (with the purchase of an all weather cover) on the burners. Best in the business
  3. Our brass “top side” burners means that our fire is projected up and out (therefore efficient) and does not lose heat out of the bottom. It is why you can use our fire pits on wood decks – many burners and metal fire pits cannot be used on a wooden deck due to heat being directed into the bottom.  The amount of BTUs is only relevant if it burns at close to 100 % efficiency. We design our own burners to maximize heat to provide maximum customer experience.
  4. We design, fabricate and continuously improve our designs based on constant direct customer feedback.  As we handle our own customer and technical service calls, direct feedback is the most important thing we do.
  5. We offer ten different colors with no difference in price
  6. Depending on stock levels and customer urgency we can ship within 1-6 weeks depending on project necessity.
  7. We offer hardwood table tops for our Hemi 26″ and 36″ bowls and our Firebox 30″. We design for both form and function.
  8. We offer bio fuel ( ethanol ) and a propane tank table for unusual plumbing situations.
  9. Electronic versions offer adjustable flame height regulation– a unique Solus feature
  10. Options including hardwood table tops, drinks rings, covers that fit, adjustable electronics all designed and made by Solus – we know our products.
  11. Solus has incorporated a recycled fly ash into its mix designs and has an active recycling and sustainability program with 75% of our byproducts recycled.
  12. Firestone – made to mimic riverstone – specifically made for Solus and is included in your purchase – Safety plays a large part in our philosophy. As an option we can sell additional firestone for that rock effect.
  13. Our Solus pits are finished by hand which creates the inimitable Solus fire pit each and every time – they are not mass produced by robots or overseas low cost labour factories.
  14. We build our products for tough Canadian climates and have thousands of fire pits in the field – Built tough with elegant designs for people who appreciate quality and durability.
  15.  Solus products leaving Vancouver are packed in museum quality crates and our ship rate has a 99.3% success rate. Our products are so well packed we have many testimonials raving about not just the product but the manner in which they are shipped.
  16. We represent ourselves – if you do have an issue in the field you call us – not a foreign call centre or clueless retailer who has no idea what they have sold you.
  17. Our testimonials speak for themselves – we have reviews on Houzz, trust pilot and many reference our price being worth it.  Take a look!

“As a designer I frequently get asked for fire bowls/pits within landscapes. I find the Solus products to be beautiful, functional and of superb quality.”

“The solid brass burners will last unlike the cheaper thin stainless burners found on other fire pits”

“Of all the fire pits I looked at, this is the best designed, sleekest and most beautiful. I love it!”

    Is the fire pit
Certified as an Appliance and why should you care ?

It means that the burner inserted into the vessels or enclosure is also certified to CSA/ANSI standards and tested as such ( and CE in Europe ) .

Most fire pit companies buy an off the shelf burner simply insert a “certified UL or CSA” burner into their vessel which means the two have not been tested in relation to each other.  This is changing due to regulatory and insurance changes in the field.  Many states and provinces are introducing new code for fully certified fire pits as appliances.  The proliferation of fire pits in big box retailers and on line has spawned a wave of regulatory and insurance changes and therefore the code and compliance of fire and fire pits in residential and commercial settings.

What is happening the world of fire pits that matters to you ?

In many jurisdictions the gas fitter or inspector has rejected burners that have been set into uncertified vessels or enclosures built on site.  The gas fitter or inspector must sign off on the installation and will require the appliance to be certified not just the burner.  States and provinces where we know this to be on the radar as of 2015 based on Solus fire pit inspections include:  New York, Massachusetts, California, Minnesota, Washington, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. It is our anticipation that many other jurisdictions across North America will follow suit and reject non certified fire pits in the coming year.

Solus Decor Renovation and Relocation

Hemi Outdoor Fire Pit Solus

Solus Decor Relocation

After many happy years at 1445 Powell Street in Vancouver we are relocating to a much larger facility at 109 Braid Street with a mix of emotions. We have many happy memories from Powell Street looking back at what we have achieved and seeing how the fire and water features have developed.  However, we are hugely excited about 2017 and the additional space at Powell Street allowing the team to have greater space and efficiency for the manufacture of our fire and water features.  All our products are made from hand cast concrete, a skilled technique requiring specialist equipment and an accomplished team to manage all aspects of the processes.

Solus Decor Renovation

The Renovation of the new facility has been spearheaded by our General Manager Gam Yeo who has given the same attention to the renovation and relocation as he does with our fire and water features on a day to day basis.  The relocation and greater space has enabled us to invest in new equipment, which in most cases have been custom made for Solus Decor products.

Customized Hopper

Our custom hopper above is for pouring concrete, this hopper will significantly increase our efficiency in pouring. It can hold enough concrete for up to four 36’’ Hemi Fire Bowls, whilst providing our pouring team with much improved ergonomics.

One of the big changes in the new facility is the new push rack system, but what are the benefits of a push rack system?

New push rack system

  • Exceptional use of space, eliminating unnecessary aisles – good use of space is good, green thinking!
  • Allows for both selectivity and dense storage
  • More picking face locations
  • Fewer moving mechanical parts
  • Accommodates all pallet sizes
  • Allows us to rack, cure and store 560 units in a footprint of 40 feet x 70 feet

It’s safe to say we are looking forward to an exciting 2017 in a new location, working with our customers on their own renovation projects.

We helped WARM UP the Bachelorette

bachelorette-eha-36When Solus Decor was approached to help enhance the setting of the Bachelorette Canada for the premier episode… we jumped at the opportunity. Knowing that the series of the Bachelor / Bachelorette is hugely popular and has a solid fan base, we couldn’t resist lending some fire pits for the “one-on-one” conversations. We think you’ll agree that our beautiful 36″ Elevated Halo and 26″ Hemi add to the gorgeous surroundings where the opening night cocktail party was held.

With the help of our Elevated Halo, bachelorette Jasmine Lorimer warmed up to several of the newly introduced bachelors. Not only did the firepit help with the ambience, but no doubt it also helped keep Jasmine warm during the shoot in Vancouver’s chilly climate.

Pictured below, Vancouver’s own Kevin P. chats with Jasmine while enjoying the warmth of our 26″ Hemi.vancouverite-bachelor-kevin-p-with-jasmineAlthough you won’t see any more of our fire pits in upcoming episodes, you can enjoy the rest of The Bachelorette Canada on the WNetwork.
