As part of the “fireplace and fire pit community” in BC, we have been following the back and forth battle between the Vancouver City Council and new construction as they attempt to ban natural gas from these new build both residential and commercially. In a rather historic and controversial decision, Vancouver City Council has reversed its ban on the use of natural gas for the heating of homes and buildings. It is important to note that this ban never included cooking appliances, fireplaces or fire pits but it did complicate things because it require you to have a separate system for heating. However, this has now been overturned. New construction will be able to heat homes using natural gas and reducing the costs of building new homes and buildings.
Of course, Solus Decor makes natural gas fire pits, but we also have a series of fireplace surrounds that frame many gas fireplaces.
We believe the reversal has resulted from the Council recognising the reality of our situation in BC (as in many other places). The last number of years we have been importing power from California (and elsewhere), using their coal and natural gas plants to meet our electrical needs.
Moreover, It has been acknowledged that electricity in BC, particularly in the last few years, hasn’t been able to meet our needs. Although we would like to be able to rely more upon renewable energy sources, this situation is not likely to change in the near or even long term future.
