Solus Launches New Outdoor Gas Firepit Design at HDExpo 2018.

Solus Decor Launches New Gas Outdoor Firepit at HDExpo 2018

Solus are looking forward to once again showcasing our modern backyard fire pits at this year’s Hospitality Design Expo, held at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.

This year we are excited to launch a new Linear fire pit. This new Solus gas firepit is 6ft in length and can be used as single height or stacked for double height. Either composition will have an impact in your outdoor space.

Solus Décor Linear Gas Firepit. Suitable for backyards or commercial spaces. Showcasing at HDExpo 2018. The new design is the result of the talented Solus team’s dedication, vision and many man hours put in to produce an innovative and contemporary design. It is unmistakably Solus.

Are you are looking to make an impact with your entrance? Or a design statement with a modern fire pit for a restaurant or hotel terrace. The Linear can provide semi-private areas when double height, or a divide areas for dining and drinks. It will also provide warmth and atmosphere but not take up valuable seating space. Made in Vancouver, Canada and shipped all over the world. Hence the Solus Linear firepit could be ideal for your restaurant, hotel or other commercial needs.

Along with the new fire pit is the metal table top.  This can convert into a drinks ring for the 36 and 48 Hemi fire pit. Solus started selling this earlier in the year and it has proved very popular for both commercial and domestic requirements. A simple disk table top is also available for the smaller 26 Hemi.

Solus Décor Hemi Gas Firebowl Firepit. With metal drinks ring. Also available as a metal table top. Shown on the terrace at Predator Ridge Resort Canada. Ideal when not used as a fire pit.

Made out of noncorrosive aluminum and stainless steel which compliments the concrete material of the fire pit. The Hemi with drinks ring provides a sculptural fire bowl design, along with somewhere for guests to put drinks. The table top turns a fire pit into a multi-use product. A modern, unusual table that also protects the gas burners when not in use.

HD Expo is the premier trade show and conference for the hospitality industry. The show has been running since 1992 and is presented by Hospitality Design magazine and today it remains at the forefront of the hospitality industry offering the newest and most innovative products.  The conference is an opportunity for those in the industry to share ideas and provide inspiration by connecting with other hospitality professionals.

On our booth, we will of course be displaying and demonstrating a selection of our best-selling fire pits and water features alongside the new additions to our collection. If you are visiting this year, please come and see us and our products on booth 1874. We look forward to meeting you.

Making the most of a roof terrace

If you have a roof terrace or balcony, how can you make the most of it? There are some inspirational ideas out there to add value to your outside space:

Create warmth and use your outside space all year with a fire pit. In a small space, it is still possible to add a functional but stylish fire pit that is safe to use. The Firecube is ideal and with different fuel options, it can conform to safety requirements. An optional table top also means it is multi-use.

Solus Firecube

For larger terraces or balconies, fire pits and tables will create a social area with seating positioned around. The Elevated Halo is a great example and used in residential and commercial spaces.

Solus Dome water feature

Water features are also an option on a terrace and can create a calm and tranquil environment. They can be an oasis in the city and integral as part of the mindful living trend for 2018*. Look out for self-circulating and “plug and play” products. This means there is no plumbing and water is not being wasted. The Dome is a great example.

There are many designers who are experienced in designing roof top and terrace gardens which do tend to be in cities where outside space is at a premium.

Amber Freda Landscape Design have created some amazing spaces in NYC and their website has a portfolio of these as well as offering informative blogs such as flowers for a city roof top garden.

The Garden Builders in the UK have also worked on transforming roof spaces in London and their blog 7 roof terrace ideas showcases some of them and offers expert advice.

The Benefits of a Fire Pit in a Commercial Environment

Hotel Eastlund roof terrace

A look at the benefits of a fire pit in the commercial environment

The benefits of a fire pit in a commercial space can’t be underestimated particularly as the competition in the hospitality industry grows year on year and space is at a premium.  Making the exterior of any commercial space is essential to ensure you can capitalize on all areas of a commercial space and thus increase trade. We are fortunate to have worked with some brilliant commercial clients; hotels, restaurants, offices, country clubs and even shopping complexes and the benefits of a fire pit in these commercial spaces is significant. In all of these spaces our products have not only added something both sculpturally and aesthetically pleasing but at the same time a unique heat source meaning these areas can be used all year round.

The Brass on Baltimore, Kansas City

The Brass on Baltimore is a beautiful historic building in Kansas City which specializes in functions and events and has been the venue for some incredible weddings.  The Brass on Baltimore have an amazing terrace with views across the city and in order to make this a key area for events they installed an Elevated Halo fire pit in the seating area on the terrace.  This has created the perfect location for cocktails and canapes, an after dinner drink or a quiet spot for the bride and groom to reflect on their special day.

The Fairmont Pacific Rim is a luxury hotel in downtown Vancouver that combines the best of the Pacific Rim in its design, décor, & culinary dining options.  They decided to add a little something extra to their most luxurious suite; the Chairman’s Suite.  The Chairman’s nicknamed the “Rock Star Suite” has everything you could possibly ask for with its private elevator, elegant entertaining areas, master bedroom and exquisite decor.  However for us the big selling point is the exclusive outdoor rooftop patio with some of the best views in the city, looking over Coal Harbour and the North Shore Mountains.  The hotel have maximized the views and this space by creating a complete outdoor living area with private gazebo, meditation pond and our Hemi fire pit to ensure that this beautiful space can be used throughout the year.

Hotel Eastlund

A hip boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Portland, which has a wealth of culture, arts, restaurants and bars on offer to locals and those visiting the city.  The Hotel Eastlund capitalized on their location and the architecture by creating a roof top bar and restaurant that is a draw for both hotel guests and locals. Our fire pit is a focal point in this space as it creates a natural place to gather around the fire.  As with the other commercial locations the introduction of a fire pit acts as a visual wow factor but crucially it acts as a much needed heat source to ensure the space works throughout the year.

An Interview with International Garden Designer; John Wyer to discuss garden design trends in 2017

We sat down with John Wyer from Bowles and Wyer to look at what 2017 has in store for their UK based design practice and garden design in general.

Based on the Hertfordshire Buckinghamshire border in the UK, Bowles & Wyer have become leading landscape and garden designers and contractors, working in their UK base and internationally for both commercial and residential clients. John Wyer officially founded Bowles and Wyer with Chris Bowles in 1993 and since then the business has continued to grow year on year.

Bowles and Wyer have an excellent reputation in both commercial and residential landscape design. Currently their work is 60% residential and 40% commercial with a focus on prime central London, which brings its own challenges with both access restrictions and interesting and unusual spaces where one needs to consider not only the horizontal but also the vertical space as with any city garden.

Commercial Landscape Design

2017 looks to be an exciting year for Bowles and Wyer with 3 prestigious commercial projects in the pipeline in prime central London; working with the Cadogan Estate on the Kings Road, Park Crescent West in Regents Park, and Audley House in Mayfair. As always, they will be combining these projects with their residential projects both in the UK and internationally.  As we talked about the projects for 2017 we discussed the differences between commercial and residential and the challenges that they both bring.  John says that “commercial and residential are very different but not always in the way you think”.  In commercial projects, there are many more meetings, more drawings and more information required due to the larger team that you are part of.  This tends to be a more decisive process due to the super structure in place but given the nature of large commercial projects developers often have bigger worries to focus on meaning the landscaping decisions can be pushed down the priority list.

Residential Garden Design

On residential projects, it is always about finding the balance between budget and design, Bowles and Wyer make it a priority to spend time educating their clients prior to the design phase; looking at their database of designs and costs per sqm, allowing the client to understand the true cost of each design.  John finds this key in helping clients understand what they can expect from their project based on their budget.

Residential garden design trends 2017

Garden Design Trends 2017

Looking at 2017 John Wyer is optimistic for the London market post Brexit. He thinks the effect will be neutral if not positive as he believes foreign investment in London will rise and this will likely be reflected in garden design.  Looking back over the last few years garden design has been very much about twin trends: on the one hand right angles and minimalism, and a second trend for upcycling and stripped back finishes. John believes these trends for were partly caused by the influence of design software such as SketchUp and also the effect of the recession.

terrace firepit garden design trends 2017
Chelsea Flower Show Winner 2016 by Andy Sturgeon

In 2017 John believes that we will be looking at a different kind of geometry, moving away from the right angles, incorporating more curves in design and an introduction of more luxurious surfaces; etched metals and coated finishes.  The advancement in porcelain has also made a significant impact on design and we will likely see more of this in 2017 with substantial developments giving many more options for outdoor floor surfaces.

The use of fire and water in landscape design is something that is here to stay.  Bowles and Wyer have seen an increase over recent years in clients looking to incorporate fire pits into their designs, where they might have previously requested a hot tub or Jacuzzi.  The “plug and play nature” of a fire pit is something that appeals to clients. The biggest challenge with incorporating fire into the design is always about matching the cost to client’s expectations.

It’s safe to say that it looks to be another successful year for John and the team at Bowles and Wyer and with designs like this it’s not hard to see why.  To find out more about Bowles and Wyer and their work take a look at their website or you can follow John on Twitter.

Specifying commercial fire pits

Outdoor Fire Pit Elevated Halo 36
Elevated Hale fire pit on patio

As a design professional, have you ever had difficulty specifying or recommending a fire pit? Were you ever confused about where to start? We’ve put together a list of questions so you know exactly what to consider on behalf of your client in order to maximize their satisfaction.

Who’s the fire pit for?

  • The primary question is who ultimately will be interacting with the fire pit and how? If you are considering a lounge or a restaurant there are different considerations than an amenity or public space.

Permit considerations

  • Each county, province or state will have its own set of regulations permitting the use of gas appliances. This has become much more of a consideration within the last year across many provinces and states.

Fuel sources

  • There really are only three options: Natural gas, LP (liquefied petroleum) or propane. On occasion there can also be biofuel or ethanol.   If there are issues as to where to run the gas line – a propane tank could be considered. Check if there are any considerations as to the running costs of the gas line though.

Some maintenance issues to consider

  • Warranty issues – most commercial products need to last. Many products are just not suitable to withstand the test of time.
  • Electronic issues – how to wire it for electronic start if necessary. Wall switch, timer or lock box.   Manual lit can work – just depends on the staff.
  • Glass shields and barriers might be a good option – and then again perhaps not. This is often a regulatory issue and not necessarily a safety issue. There are just as many issues with glass as there are no glass.
  • Purpose of fire pit – Is it meant to serve as primarily a heating source, an aesthetic statement or to create ambience and atmosphere?
  • Seating height – what seating is around the fire pit – what is the optimum height?
How will the elements interact with the fire pit and are its components robust enough to withstand wind, heat, rain, sleet and snow?
  • Are fire pits within the budget of the client? How do you measure the quality of the fire pit?
