Solus Launches New Outdoor Gas Firepit Design at HDExpo 2018.

Solus Decor Launches New Gas Outdoor Firepit at HDExpo 2018

Solus are looking forward to once again showcasing our modern backyard fire pits at this year’s Hospitality Design Expo, held at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.

This year we are excited to launch a new Linear fire pit. This new Solus gas firepit is 6ft in length and can be used as single height or stacked for double height. Either composition will have an impact in your outdoor space.

Solus Décor Linear Gas Firepit. Suitable for backyards or commercial spaces. Showcasing at HDExpo 2018. The new design is the result of the talented Solus team’s dedication, vision and many man hours put in to produce an innovative and contemporary design. It is unmistakably Solus.

Are you are looking to make an impact with your entrance? Or a design statement with a modern fire pit for a restaurant or hotel terrace. The Linear can provide semi-private areas when double height, or a divide areas for dining and drinks. It will also provide warmth and atmosphere but not take up valuable seating space. Made in Vancouver, Canada and shipped all over the world. Hence the Solus Linear firepit could be ideal for your restaurant, hotel or other commercial needs.

Along with the new fire pit is the metal table top.  This can convert into a drinks ring for the 36 and 48 Hemi fire pit. Solus started selling this earlier in the year and it has proved very popular for both commercial and domestic requirements. A simple disk table top is also available for the smaller 26 Hemi.

Solus Décor Hemi Gas Firebowl Firepit. With metal drinks ring. Also available as a metal table top. Shown on the terrace at Predator Ridge Resort Canada. Ideal when not used as a fire pit.

Made out of noncorrosive aluminum and stainless steel which compliments the concrete material of the fire pit. The Hemi with drinks ring provides a sculptural fire bowl design, along with somewhere for guests to put drinks. The table top turns a fire pit into a multi-use product. A modern, unusual table that also protects the gas burners when not in use.

HD Expo is the premier trade show and conference for the hospitality industry. The show has been running since 1992 and is presented by Hospitality Design magazine and today it remains at the forefront of the hospitality industry offering the newest and most innovative products.  The conference is an opportunity for those in the industry to share ideas and provide inspiration by connecting with other hospitality professionals.

On our booth, we will of course be displaying and demonstrating a selection of our best-selling fire pits and water features alongside the new additions to our collection. If you are visiting this year, please come and see us and our products on booth 1874. We look forward to meeting you.

Feature Project: Memorial Garden at Trinity Western University

A scholarship and courtyard renovation honor the life of Jordan Thiessen.

A very special fire pit was installed at the Trinity Western University in British Columbia. It is in memory of the life of Jordan Thiessen who was a student at the university. During his time at the university Jordan felt that the unloved and uncared for Douglas Courtyard could be a beautiful space. With some planting and a fire pit it would offer a place for students to relax and enjoy on campus.  Something he shared with his parents during a campus visit.

When Jordan sadly lost his life on October 18 2012, just 12 days after he married his university sweetheart, the family wanted to do something in his memory. His parents, Shirley and Carey set up the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship endowment but they wanted to do more. They recognized the deep impact that the University had on Jordan’s short life. They felt that making over the Douglas courtyard would not only honor Jordan, but it would also benefit all future students. Shirley threw herself into raising funds for both the scholarship and the courtyard project. The Jordan Thiessen Memorial Courtyard was dedicated September 14, 2013. On what would have been Jordan’s 24th birthday.

The memorial garden is now a wonderful place for students to enjoy, which gives great pleasure to Jordan’s parents.  If you would like to give to the courtyard project, or to the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship, please email Shirley Thiessen at shirley.thiessen@twu.ca.

Making the most of a roof terrace

If you have a roof terrace or balcony, how can you make the most of it? There are some inspirational ideas out there to add value to your outside space:

Create warmth and use your outside space all year with a fire pit. In a small space, it is still possible to add a functional but stylish fire pit that is safe to use. The Firecube is ideal and with different fuel options, it can conform to safety requirements. An optional table top also means it is multi-use.

Solus Firecube

For larger terraces or balconies, fire pits and tables will create a social area with seating positioned around. The Elevated Halo is a great example and used in residential and commercial spaces.

The Gwen Hotel, Chicago featuring a Solus Decor Elevated Halo fire table

Solus Dome water feature

Water features are also an option on a terrace and can create a calm and tranquil environment. They can be an oasis in the city and integral as part of the mindful living trend for 2018*. Look out for self-circulating and “plug and play” products. This means there is no plumbing and water is not being wasted. The Dome is a great example.

There are many designers who are experienced in designing roof top and terrace gardens which do tend to be in cities where outside space is at a premium.

Amber Freda Landscape Design have created some amazing spaces in NYC and their website has a portfolio of these as well as offering informative blogs such as flowers for a city roof top garden.

The Garden Builders in the UK have also worked on transforming roof spaces in London and their blog 7 roof terrace ideas showcases some of them and offers expert advice.

Outdoor Trends for 2018 including wabi-sabi…

With offices on both sides of the Atlantic (North America and the UK) Solus gets a unique insight into the plans of designers and architects.

It always leads to some interesting observations and noticeable trends such as water conscious gardening, embracing imperfections and smart home and garden automation.

The Solus Dome water feature embracing wabi-sabi
The Solus Dome water feature embracing wabi-sabi

Water conscious gardening is a movement towards the more considered use of water for outdoor settings. This extends from understanding the most efficient uses of water during droughts to the most elegant uses in water-rich environments. Particularly in drought prone areas outdoor landscape designs are using more appropriate plants, storing and re circulating rainwater and installing irrigation systems that water the roots directly. In more water-rich environments gardeners are installing water features and water gardens to maximise the ambiance of their gardens and outdoor patios.

Smart home automation has been a major trend that is being seen throughout Europe and North America. Products like Amazon Echo and Google Home (that allow you to control everything in your home from your thermostat to your lighting) have made home automation achievable in any home or setting. This trend has been carried outdoors into gardens and outdoor spaces. Firepits, water features, hot tubs, irrigation systems and outdoor lighting are all examples of products that can now be controlled by smart devices. Solus Decor’s water features and electronic ignition firepits can be hooked up to home automation systems.

The Japanese philosophy of embracing imperfection, called wabi-sabi, has become an industry buzz word of late. For gardens using or recycling materials like concrete, stone and wood and avoiding the use of plastics or synthetics wherever possible. These natural materials all are beautiful because of their imperfections and they help reflect the organic nature of a garden. At Solus we embrace this philosophy with concrete product features that are hand cast and imperfectly perfect.

Feature Project: Hotel Eastlund, Portland

Our feature project is the Hotel Eastlund, a boutique hotel in the centre of the lively city of Portland

Having worked with a number of hotels in various locations we are also keen to be involved with these projects, particularly as we recognize the benefits of adding a fire pit to any commercial venue.  It is always a pleasure to be involved in any hotel project but given the design led nature of the Hotel Eastlund it makes it even more special.  Hotel Eastlund is the newest and finest luxury hotel in Portland combining classic, clean style with modern sophistication in downtown’s thriving Eastside.  In recent years Portland has become well known for the arts, culture and top class restaurants. Water Dome

The Water Dome

These water bowls feature polished metal domes that appear to float inside of concrete vessels. Water flows up through the center of each dome to run over the reflective surface of the hand-spun metal and then drop off the edges into the surrounding water creating sound. Like our concrete pieces, each metal dome is handmade and unique. The variations, inconsistencies and undulations characteristic of hand-spun metal create the beautiful water movement and reflections that define these water features.

The three dome sizes each have a different character as the curvature of the metal domes increases with their diameter. The Water Dome 26  has a modest curve that reads almost flat, reflecting its surroundings on its polished surface to create a pool like effect. With it’s wider surface the Water Dome 36 has a soft curve that bends and reflects light, arcing above the rim of the concrete bowl. As the largest dome the Water Dome 48 is generous and bold with a pronounced, rounded contour.

Scupper with Basin

The Scupper with Basin

An adaptation of our Scupper water bowls this version combines two concrete vessels to create a simple, self contained water feature. As with our original Scuppers, clean edged, mechanically formed metal and smooth concrete are brought to life by the liquid movement and pleasing sound of water. The Hemispherical bowl fills with water from a central hole in its base, creating a deep pool that spills out through the reflective channel of the scupper into the basin below. These water features can be used in any level location that has access to a standard electrical outlet. Appropriate for residential and commercial installation indoors and out.

Hemi with ring

The Hemi with Ring

Expansions of the original Hemi line of Solus concrete fire pits the Ringed Hemis add a wide ringed surface to the top of our classic fire bowls to create contemporary fire tables. We designed the ring tops to respect the clean contours of the original bowls while providing a functional surface for small glasses and plates. A clean, modern reveal around the bottom edge of each ring adds visual lightness. The formal simplicity of these fire tables allow them to be used in a wide range of aesthetic settings. Available in 36″ and 48″ sizes to suit most spaces.

This year’s judging panel is made up of some exceptional names in the design industry, find out more about the panel.

The winners of each category will be announced on 31st August, thank you again to Western Living Magazine for selecting Solus Decor as a finalist

Chelsea Flower Show, London 2017

We’re back in the office this week and have a chance to reflect on the highlights of RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017; the planting and flowers, sensational gardens and the colorful characters visiting the show.

The weather is always a question mark over the Chelsea Flower Show as it is in the majority an outdoor event, this year we had been anxious as the build up had seen torrential rain almost everyday.  However as the show opened the sunshine arrived and stayed for the duration, we couldn’t have wished for better weather; showing the gardens and all the outdoor products at their very best and putting a smile on all the visitor’s faces.

Best in Show

The gardens are the big draw for most visitors offering inspiration and insight into the incredible hard work involved in creating the show gardens for Chelsea Flower Show.  The Best Show Garden was the M&G Garden designed by James Basson.  The designer’s vision of a garden was created from a disused limestone quarry including a large botanical range of flora from Malta. Designed with great impact it delivers a hard message about the vulnerability of Malta’s natural landscapes and resources.

The Best Fresh Garden was designed by Kate Gould, City Living showing a an imagined space in an urban apartment block, providing the occupants with attractive and useable small gardens.  These multi-level gardens highlight the importance of greening inner city spaces, not only for residents’ enjoyment but also to benefit the environment as a whole.

The Best Artisan Garden was the Walker’s Wharf Garden supported by Doncaster Deaf Trust and designed by Graham Bodle. The garden reflects the beauty of industrial decay embellished by restrained plantings of conifers including pines and larch as well as lush woodland perennials.

WaterAid

This year we decided to collaborate with WaterAid by selling our concrete tea light holders at the show with all proceeds going to WaterAid, this proved a huge success and we are pleased to announce that we have raised £1,200, which will enable WaterAid to supply a school sanitation block for 250 children (£1050) and three wheelchair accessible toilets (£50 each) in Bangladesh.

People Watching at Cheslea Flower Show

Of course RHS Chelsea is mainly about the gardens and flowers but it’s also a great spot for fantastic people watching; whether that’s getting a glimpse of a Chelsea Pensioner in their full regalia, a celeb spot on press day or simply somebody with fantastic style to match the gardens.

The Canadians take Chelsea Flower Show by storm

Solus dome water feature fountain

For the second year in a row Solus are exhibiting at Chelsea Flower Show in London

Chelsea Flower Show is the epitome of all things British; gardening, flowers, afternoon tea and even the Royal stamp of approval.  The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, formally known as the Great Spring Show is a garden show held for five days in May by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, London.  The show has a long history and has been held in Chelsea since 1912 so as you can imagine it is steeped in tradition as we found out when we exhibited for the first time in 2016.

Chelsea Royal Hospital Front View

The show is a great opportunity to see new garden and outdoor living products and many are seen for the first time at Chelsea but for many the main draw is the incredible show gardens.  The show gardens take centre stage at the show with incredible vision and creativity displayed, not to mention the huge amount of hard work and labor involved to create the gardens.

Chelsea Barracks Garden Designed by Jo Thompson

We are very proud of our Canadian roots and taking Solus products to the world’s stage.  Solus designs its fire and water features for the extreme climates of Canada and the US.  One of the key things we wanted to do was add a fresh take to outdoor living, showing the traditional British gardener how we do it in North America.  The outdoor fire pit is still a relatively new concept in the UK so the Canadians definitely caused a stir at the show last year, so much so that we were shortlisted for Garden Product of the year for our fire cube.  The smallest of our products that is ideal for lighting up dark corners or if you have a small outdoor space, which is perhaps more common in the UK particularly in a city like London.

The Canadians are back again this year in fine form and we are excited once again to be shortlisted for product of the year, this time we’re impressing with our water; our 48″ Water Dome.  We are hoping to bring back gold and make Canada proud at the Chelsea Flower Show!

Concrete Inspiration and Design

Solus dome water feature fountain

It’s no secret that we’re fans of concrete and it is a fundamental part of what makes our fire and water features so unique, but why Concrete?

According to Houzz, 2017 is seeing a push in design to incorporate the use of more sustainable and durable materials in furniture and bathroom and kitchen design. This is filtering its way through to the high street as we can see the introduction of more concrete and other durable and sustainable materials into furniture and home accessories. We’re taking a look at the production of concrete, the key elements that make it such a great material to use in design and in the process picking some of our favorite images that team together metal elements with concrete just as we do in our own designs.

Solus Water Dome combining elements of concrete and brass

Why Concrete

  • Concrete is one of the most ubiquitous construction materials on the planet, it is incredibly durable and versatile.
  • Concrete is composed of materials that are readily available and often local.
  • The production of concrete is a relatively simple process.

The production of concrete:

Concrete is formed when hydraulic cement reacts cHemically with water and binds with a blend of aggregates. This reaction, called hydration, causes the concrete mixture to harden and continues if there is free moisture to react with the cement.

This hydration stage is called “curing”. Curing can continue on a minuscule level for months, even years, but most concrete markedly cures in 28 days. During this time, concrete gains the bulk of its strength and loses most of its moisture content to the cHemical reaction and to evaporation.

For aesthetic concrete used for home and garden design, the initial 28-day cure is of great importance as this is when the concrete will undergo a change in appearance – from a darker, wet-looking surface to a lighter, dry one.

This is also the time when the concrete’s true color, with all its nuances, reveals itself. Concrete cured for at least 28 days is not only stronger than younger or “greener” concrete, but it is more aesthetically stable.

It is worth keeping in mind that proper cure time is essential to the creation of a quality hand cast concrete product. Patience is part of the recipe for a lifetime of function and enjoyment from any concrete feature whether used indoors or outdoors.

The hard-wearing nature and aesthetically pleasing elements of concrete is precisely the reason we continue to see concrete used as a key element in today’s interiors; kitchens, bathrooms, staircases, flooring, lighting, and accessories.

The nature of concrete means it is ideal for the modern home due to its durability and longevity, fitting perfectly with the current desire to incorporate more sustainable and environmentally conscious thinking in design. This current trend is synonymous with the Solus design philosophy; to design and produce beautiful, long lasting designs that run counter to a culture that has been obsessed with trends and disposable products.
